Stem Cells Cruises towards Clinical Trials in Japan

This medical news, reported in Nature last week (27th February 2013), is hoping to start real clinical trials in 6 patients who have severe age-related macular degeneration, a common cause of blindness that affects at least 1% of people.

They are taking some adult stem cells, reprogramming them into retina cells and injecting them into the eye. That is it, in a nutshell.

We will have to be patient! This trial isn’t guaranteed to work and even if it does, it will be years before anyone sees any treatments in our local hospitals!

But it is refreshing to hear about these latest efforts to solve blindness! Carry on those Japanese researchers! Good luck!
