Friends, welcome to our Spring Newsletter!

Our Meeting in January was very informative and I am pleased that items we presented to Tracey and Karla from the Borough Council, were very warmly received and some items have been followed up as I will report at our Meeting on 26 March.

    Next Meeting

Matthew Thubron, will be the speaker at our Meeting. Matthew represents Trading Standards. He will be informing us of the dangers of Debt Sharks who are targeting many vulnerable people in our community.

He will be accompanied by a colleague who will speak with about Pressure sales people and how to say No to them.

Wendy has a question and answer paper from DWP explaining about the forth coming changes to DLA. She may be able to answer some of your queries.

    Bus Travel

From 1 April 2012 blind and partially sighted people will be able to travel at any time of the day in Norfolk, including the option of a companion to support you.

The passes at the moment do not have a symbol to show this entitlement to the driver, so passes will be re-issued during March to all pass holders registered as blind or partially sighted (the symbol will be a clock face).

Call Norfolk County Council on 0344 800 8020 if you have not received your new Bus Pass by April.

    NNAB News

As you may already know, John Child director of NNAB, is retiring at the end of May, after nearly 20 years at the helm. His replacement as CEO is Brigadier Max Marriner.

You will have the opportunity to meet Max Marriner at a special coffee morning at NNAB Great Yarmouth on May 18th.

Shaun will update us on the RNIB Campaign concerning this major change and how we still can get involved! I will update on my Sponsored Diet for the group’s funds.

Caister Road, at 2.30. Book your Taxi on 01493 301 759

    Dear all.

Welcome to our first Newsletter of 2012.

Most of you will have heard that our good friend Penny Cox has sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with Les and family at this time.

Penny was our secretary for many years and worked hard lobbying for improvements to make life fairer for visually impaired people.

One of the campaigns was to get black and yellow tape on all scaffolding which took five years to achieve. She and Linda took part in a march on parliament to protest at the proposed cuts in benefits and Penny also took part in a demonstration in Norwich recently.

She will be sadly missed by us all.

More sad news Terry Driver has died following a long illness. Terry supported our group for many years.

We extend our sympathy to Muriel and family.

    Equality and Diversity Project

Our Guest speaker for our Meeting on 30 January is Tracey Jones, who is a Partnerships Officer in the Corporate Strategy for Communities at Great Yarmouth Borough Council.

The Borough Council have a new Equality and Diversity policy to implement in April. This will be a good opportunity to enable Tracey to take back to council any issues we have with accessing their services. This will include us needing written documents from them like rate bills in the format so we can read them independently.

We can also speak about access to Borough Council buildings and services like Rubbish Collections.

Our first telephone survey was a great success. For those who were unable to get to the meeting we put forward your queries to Mr Dawdrey. You will see from the minutes of the meeting about the lack of finance for pedestrian crossings that we say are needed.

More Telephone Surveys will definably follow!

The latest county news is that the Blue Badges will change in the way of getting them. There are more medical checks involved and the cost goes up to £10 each time but they still last for three years. And Bus Passes now can only be issued from Norwich or on the web. We are talking with the Council to find out what provision they plan for us and other people who cannot use the internet or travel to Norwich.

Our Christmas Lunch at NNAB was a great success and many thanks to Wendy, Dave and Liz for all your help. Everybody enjoyed themselves particularly the unique raffle!

Continuing with the NNAB, they are planning to run a brand new Photography group in Norwich and they say ?Overcome your sight difficulties and enjoy photography amongst friends who understand the problems. We will be using projectors and a big screen and can offer advice and friendly support.?

Meetings are planned for the 1st Friday each month. The first will be on Friday 2nd March from 2pm to 3:30pm. Please contact Mark or Simon on 01603 629 558 if you are at all interested.

Finally we would appreciate your ideas for future meetings, whether it is more guest speakers from business or leisure, that might have an impact on our lives, in order to advise them on best practice, understanding and gain more respect for all VIPs.

Issue 19 Special Edition October 2011

    World Sight Day !
    by the British Lions

A Demonstration of living Everyday as Blind or Partially Sighted!
Raising Awareness of Visual Impairment and its difficulties!

This newsletter is a special edition to celebrate the very special and important event being organised by the British Lions all over the world. It is called the World Sight Day and in Great Yarmouth it is being held on Saturday 15th October 2011 in St. George Park from 11am.

The Great Yarmouth VIP User Group have come along to show and advise the public, to provide a better understanding for Visual Impairments and what impact it has on our daily lives!

Our group has been going for over twelve years now, campaigning and raising awareness of the difficulties faced by our blind and partially sighted members in this district of Great Yarmouth! The Group holds regular meetings, to discuss the latest concern and invite a guest speaker to give us their knowledge but also to learn from us any facts and useful information. It is all down to increasing understanding and respect for our Visual Impairment.

    Our Members

We bring together people from all walks of life, of all ages, who have some visual defect of any level, to our meetings, take part in campaigns, offer advice and information and take part in telephone surveys. We are building a community of VIPs with their families and carers, so we can share our support, understanding and relief of the difficulties of being Blind or Partially Sighted.

    Our achievements

We communicate with the local authorities and businesses to guide them in ways that will make it easier for any VIP to appreciate the services better without troublesome misunderstandings or barriers to our basic needs.

Our latest success is the adaptation of yellow and black hazard markings on all scaffolding poles to provide a much better contrast so it is safer for partially sighted people to see the scaffolds around buildings.

    Our Campaigns

We are starting a campaign to raise the awareness of cars and other vehicles parking on our public footpaths and pavement, without due care or attention for people who rely on these vital and safe means of walking to destinations like the shops, bus stops etc.

We are also pushing the government to bring back our Bus Pass concession so we can travel before the 9:30am cut off point. The Government has hit Norfolk very hard in cutting grants, just because of a formula which discriminates against us!

    Next Meeting

On Monday 28th November 2011, from 2pm, is our next meeting. We will hopefully have a senior engineer from the County’s highway department to come and talk about their future plans and listen to us, take away advice on best practices in catering for VIPs.

    The meeting venue is
    Wherry Way Communal Room
    Wherry Way, Caister Road
    Great Yarmouth
    NR30 4DG

We provide a subsidised taxi service to help our members come safely. It costs £4.

    The Big Conversation

Many of us have taken part in the Norfolk County Council’s Big Conversation. Many of us took part in the meetings in Great Yarmouth. Indeed there have been many correspondents from our group. We suggested a phone line put in place and indeed it was.

I went to County Hall on 19 January for a debate hosted by NCODP. At this meeting we heard the views of the 5 county councillors. This was a lively debate.

It was announced that Sensory Support would be able to continue, so be it with half their budget cut. There were other important factors discussed that will effect everyone. We will do our best to keep you informed.

    Good News

We have received the second half of our Small Grants NHS funding. We are grateful for this and appreciate the help that we have from Helen, Nelly and all at Voluntary Norfolk.

Penny has been working very hard over the last few years to get the specifications changed for Scaffolding demarcation from red and White to Black and Yellow.

The scaffold companies are made aware of the changes and allowed to gear up for them.

It is intended to be fully implemented by the new procedure for the 1 April 2011.

    This has been confirmed by

Clive Derry Senior Engineer (Network Management) Environment, Transport and Development Norfolk County Council. We would like to pass our thanks on to Penny, RNIB, Tony Wright and Brandon Lewis M.P. who is still pursuing the situation to get the recommendation nationwide.

Grapevine celebrated their 30th birthday on 16 January. Some of us attended their birthday lunch at the Burlington Hotel. Congratulations to all at Grapevine.

We look forward to seeing you at our meetings soon. David Chairman@GYVIPUserGroup.org.uk call 07990998845
