Analogue TV switch off date next year !
by Shaun McGarry, Vice Chairman on 25th September 2010 8:21 pm

Comments: 0 Add a CommentDear Member’s and Friends
In last week’s Yarmouth Mercury was reported that the Analogue TV switch off date is to be 9th November 2011 for BBC 1 and BBC 2 and 23rd November for ITV, C4 and Channel Five in our region of Norfolk.
Some of you may have already tried watching or listening to the Freeview digital channels but cannot get a decent signal, this apparently will also be solved by boosting power at the same time therefore we should get a much better quality.
There is help available who might not be able to afford to upgrade their aerial or buy a Freeview digital box or even just simply have some help with understanding the technical stuff!
You can phone the helpline on 0800 5 19 20 21
Or visit the web site at http://www.helpscheme.co.uk/
The RNIB has more information about digital TV and Radio at
Thank you.
Regards
Shaun

World Sight Day
On Saturday 9th October 2010 at high noon, the British Lions is organising a special demonstration for all sighted people, of what it is like being blind, by blindfolding everyone and taking them on a walk around St. George park in central Yarmouth.
The Great Yarmouth MP, Brandon Lewis and the Borough’s Mayor, Michael Jeal, will be there along with John Child, director of Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind (NNAB) will be there. The HAPPI Project will have a stall there with a team of volunteers to help guide the blindfolded around as well as members from the Great Yarmouth VIP User Group. It is open to everyone to come along to discover and experience that dark, dark world that blind people are living in on a daily basis! So just for a few minutes, a sighted person can find out for themselves the impact of no vision!
The walk will start at 12O’Clock (high noon) and the route is about 300metres long around the park. It will be an ideal opportunity to talk to blind people and ask how they cope with life as well as making new friends.
Please bring everyone you can think of and spread the word!

Coping with Windows 7 and Outlook 2010
by Shaun McGarry, Vice Chairman on 20th September 2010 4:32 pm

Comments: 1 See the CommentI have recently upgraded to Windows 7 and the full Office 2010. I have been using XP and Office 2000 before so it is a big, big jump for me!! Phew!
The biggest different is in two areas :
Too many buttons, links and other fields
What a different the old humble Windows Explorer is now! There are so many things you have to tab pass I order to jump from one part to another. For example selecting a different folder to save your work in is now about 3 or 4 shift tab keystrokes to get to the folder tree view and once you have got there.. .. Do Not Forget To Press the enter key to positively open that folder! When you tab out of the file list view you get to the “headings” of the columns and here you can change the sort order or the positional order of the columns themselves but my point is that this is such a low level of change that it is getting annoying to keep having to tab pass it all the time!
Ribbons
Cor Blimey Mate! Ribbons are just awful!! There is no logical structure to the way you get from one item to another one! It is like Demolition Derby, you are crashing into one group after another and suddenly you entered a text box like a font name! Phew! I am glad to hear that JAWS 12 is going to provide Virtual Ribbons based on the clean and well defined structure of a menu.

He will talk about the latest news and policies and which direction the government is going plus he will bring updates of local issues like the train station make over.
Mr Lewis will be also attending the World Sight day at St. George park in central Yarmouth on the 9th October 2010. He will wear a blindfold and walk around the park which is about 300m long ! This is a valuable lesson for any sighted person to appreciate what it is like to be black blind.

Comments: 0 Add a CommentBrandon Lewis, the MP for Great Yarmouth is coming to our next meeting on 27th September 2010.
We will have the opportunities to listen to him about the latest news from Central Government and the latest local news like the railway station. But of course our meetings is always a two way process and anyone will have the chance to ask him questions about concerns, issues and other thoughts or ideas that you would like to pass to Brandon.
Hope everyone can get there for 2pm (half hour for a cup of tea or coffee) and then at 2:30pm the meeting starts proper!
