    Dear Members and Friends

Could you possibly do this survey and tell Norfolk County Council how they could improve (if any) their information, Advice and Advocacy.

See their message and questions below. Either send an email or print it off and post it. See the very bottom of message for contact details.

    Thank you.

    = = = Message from Norfolk County Council = = =

Your experiences of Information, Advice and Advocacy

Norfolk County Council wants to make sure that people can get good information, advice and advocacy to help them make decisions about how they, and their family and friends, can lead independent lives. We want people to have access to information and support in arranging services, whether or not we are funding their care.

We are therefore developing a new Information, Advice and Advocacy strategy for Norfolk. This strategy will then inform what Information, Advice and Advocacy services we commission for local people.

Although we already know a lot about people’s information needs and will be using existing research and guidance to inform this work, we need to do some more work in finding out about the experiences of some groups of people to help us to develop our strategy.

We are also looking for people to help work with us to produce the strategy itself, and help us commission the services that the strategy says people need.

. How are we are engaging?

Our first step is to find out people’s experiences. We are doing this in three ways:

    - We are visiting local groups to talk to people face-to-face

    - We are sending out information to groups that we can’t meet, to enable them to feed in their comments

    - We have both online and paper online feedback forms, that people can use to feed back their experiences

At the same time we will be looking for volunteers who are interested in getting more involved in the process. We will then invite some of the volunteers to come to two meetings in August to help us develop our strategy. We will try and get a wide range of people to take part.

    . When we are engaging

We need to start commissioning our new service at the beginning of September.

This means that we need to know about peoples experiences by the end of July.

Volunteers will then meet in August to look at all the information we have about information, advice and advocacy in Norfolk and to help develop the strategy.

How are we feeding back and using the results of our engagement?

We will publish our final strategy on our website and use it to develop a specification for our information, advice and advocacy services.

Your experiences of Information, Advice and Advocacy

Please can you look at the questions below and answer any that are relevant to you. Please write your response in the box below the question. Thank you.

    1. Where do you / would you go if you need/ed information or advice?

    2. Where do you / would you go if you need/ed advocacy?

Over 5,000 disabled people travelled from across the UK to London on May 11 to support the ‘Hardest Hit’ campaign and make sure MPs understood the impact welfare reform plans and local cuts will have on them.

The Hardest Hit campaign continues. Our social care system is in need of urgent reform. Earlier this month, we welcomed the Dilnot report on the future funding of social care and support in England. The review is widely recognised as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reform social care.

We are now calling on the Government to act swiftly with a clear timetable for reform. To ensure reform is both fair and sustainable, any plans must reflect the voices of those with experience of the care system and organisations that represent them.

This is where you come in. Please take a few minutes to http://rnibnews.org.uk/C9W-H5ZL-1LKZ3H-6PZO6-1/c.aspx answer three questions on your priorities for social care reform – we need to hear from you.

At the end of June, following a strong campaign by RNIB, Sense and our European Blind Union partners, the European Parliament adopted a http://rnibnews.org.uk/C9W-H5ZL-1LKZ3H-6Q3I6-1/c.aspx written declaration on accessible labelling. A whopping 447 MEPs, including 39 from the UK, signed, which is the highest number of signatures of any written declaration this Parliamentary term.

This is a fantastic campaign success which we will use to show ministers, MPs and industry that we now have the overwhelming support of the European Parliament for more accessible labelling of products. Though the declaration is not a new law, this success will really help with the push for better and more accessible labelling of products in the UK.

    AGM and Group Update

    Looking to the Future

Dear All, welcome to our July Newsletter. I hope that you are enjoying all the sunshine that we have been having.

    AGM

Our Annual General Meeting will form the main part of our meeting on 25 July. Most of our committee will be standing for re-election. However we have room and would welcome some new faces. This is very interesting work. If you are interested please call Penny, Shaun or me, our telephone numbers are at the end of this Newsletter. Paul Bowerbank will be along to update us on the Sensory Support Unit.

    Belton Fete

We have a stall at Belton Fete this year. It takes place on Sunday 17 July 10am to 5pm, in New Road playing field.

If you have any small items that you would like to donate please call Shaun, Penny or me and we will arrange the items to be picked up or let you know where you can drop them off. It is the first time we have fund raised in this way. If you know of any other events that we could get involved in then please let us know. If you are able to help in any way we would be grateful.

The HAPPI Group with their “Oops A Daisy” project also are supporting us. Come and Sow A Seed with us! They have been invited to come to our September meeting to explain more about this latest project.

    Other News

It was good to see Sarah at our last meeting and we found the information very interesting. A full report is contained in the Minutes of that meeting which you should have.

Sarah has been re-invited back to our September meeting.

At our last meeting Terry asked our MP, Brandon Lewis, via his aide, Lewis Roberts, “Why are people that are sixty five and over not entitled to be considered for the New higher rate DLA Component for Severely Blind people.” Some members have received a letter from Brandon explaining that if you are in receipt of the Old Age Pension you are not entitled to the new allowance.

Chris Stanley came along with his Hybrid electric car and he drove it backwards and forwards and none of us could hear it! There is a full report in the minutes and I will get the picture to our website soon. Thanks Chris it was good to see you. We look forward to his British Lions “World Sight Day” when I expect some of us will be walking in Saint Georges Park.

Cobolt Systems had a good exhibition, showing their range of talking gadgets like measuring jugs, kitchen scales, FM Radio and lots more, at our NNAB Centre in Great Yarmouth. Also there is a good range of equipment from RNIB and others too. NNAB are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10am to 1pm. Telephone 01493 745 973. Wendy Liz and Janet will be always happy to talk with you.
