Beach Zumbathon to launch Exercise4Life
Thousands of people are expected to sign up for the UK wide Exercise4Life campaign being launched at Great Yarmouth’s Marina Centre and beach on Saturday (September 3). Locals looking to get fitter and have a lot of fun are being encouraged to join the Great Yarmouth exercise drive.
“Exercise4Life offers fun-filled activities which are suitable for all ages and all abilities. They’re designed to get people moving and enjoy taking exercise – no matter what age.”
Among the activities to try out on Saturday’s Taster Day are cycling, running, walking, zumba dancing, swimming, Nordic Walking and hula hooping. These will all be featured monthly activities throughout the campaign.
Organised by the WRIGHT Foundation charity, working in partnership with NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney and backed by local authorities and leisure centres, Exercise4Life offers an innovative rolling programme of monthly featured activities to get the country moving.
On Saturday, Mayor of Great Yarmouth Barry Coleman will officially launch the campaign with the taster day (10am-4pm) featuring all the exercise activities in the year-long programme. Local people will have the chance to dance themselves into the record books by taking part in an all-comers Zumbathon at 2pm on the beach.
WRIGHT Foundation project manager Louise Bebbington explained the campaign is the ideal opportunity for the community to get active.
“A huge percentage of people never set foot in a gym as they don’t feel comfortable,” she said. “It’s all about providing the motivation for people to take up exercise. The taster day will give people “a go” at different activities and talk to experts in each discipline. We hope hundreds of local people will join in the hour-long Zumbathon which will be great fun – and great exercise and also set a UK record?
“Everyone involved in Exercise4Life is a winner.”
Exercise4Life meets The WRIGHT Foundation charity’s core aim, to improve people’s fitness and health through exercise. It also supports the government’s Change4Life initiative.
Charity chairman Murdo Wallace explained why people should get involved.
“It is proven beyond any doubt that “exercise is medicine”, he said. “Firstly, it is one of the best ways of building resistance to illness and, secondly, it has proved an excellent aid to recovery for many ailments.”
Last year around 10,000 people took part in a month-long Exercise4Life pilot being run throughout 500 leisure centres in the UK. The success of that pilot has prompted the ongoing exercise campaign which hopes to involve around 1,500 centres nationwide.

Press Release #167
16 August 2011
Care available across Great Yarmouth and Waveney for minor injuries
NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney is advising people needing immediate medical attention for minor illness or minor injury during weekends to visit NHS Greyfriars in Great Yarmouth or the Minor Injuries Units in Beccles Hospital, Beccles.
At both locations anyone can be seen regardless of where they are registered from 8am-8pm 365 days each year. No appointment is needed. The most common reasons for attending are minor illness or minor injury, such as minor burns or cuts.
The call to visit either NHS Greyfriars, located at 5 Greyfriars Way, Great Yarmouth or the Minor Injuries Unit at Beccles Hospital, St Mary’s Road, Beccles is part of NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney’s Choose Well campaign, which advises people to choose their care wisely to gain the most appropriate treatment for their condition.
The first option is self care – many minor illnesses can be treated with rest and a well-stocked medicines cabinet at home. Pharmacists will be able to offer you advice about over-the-counter medicines – such as coughs and colds.
If you have a minor injury or illness that needs treatment, but isn’t urgent, you should call your GP. Remember the out of hours service is for urgent problems only, can it wait until morning?
If you or your child needs to be seen immediately but does not have a serious illness or injury, you can access treatment during the week at the following locations:
. NHS Greyfriars walk-in centre, 5 Greyfriars Way, Great Yarmouth. Open daily from 8am to 8pm. Appointments aren’t necessary. Call 01493 335340.
. Beccles MIU, Beccles Hospital, St Mary’s Road. Open daily from 8am to 8pm. Call 01502 719820.
. Southwold MIU, Southwold Surgery, York Road. Open from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Call 01502 722326.
. Halesworth MIU, Patrick Stead Hospital, Bungay Road. Open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Call 01986 872124.
The Out of Hours service can be reached on 0844 736 9530
There are 50 community pharmacies across NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney’s area. Pharmacy opening times can be found on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk. You can also call NHS Direct for details of pharmacy services available in your area on 0845 46 47.

Bogus BT calls demanding Credit Card details
by Shaun McGarry, Vice Chairman on 16th August 2011 5:57 pm
Sections: General
Comments: 0 Add a Comment= = = Message from the Police = = =
A real story .. ..
I received a call from a ‘representative’ of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill.
He demanded payment immediately of £31.00 or it would be £ 118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
The guy wasn’t even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly Virgin Media have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!
I asked the guy’s name – he gave me the very ‘English’ John Peacock with a very ‘African’ accent
& phone number – 0800 0800 152.
Obviously the fellow realized I didn’t believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how? He told me to hang up & try phoning someone – he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this.
AND HE DID
My phone was dead – no engaged tone, nothing – until he phoned me again.
Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then. I said that I didn’t know how he’d done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn’t believe his name or that he worked for BT. He hung up.
I dialled 1471 but number was withheld!
I phoned his 0800 number but was not recognized!
So I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn’t the first! It’s only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it’s real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this.
How is it done?
This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number – it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business.
The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can’t dial out. But he can hear you trying (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it).
When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced!
The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool many.
By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services .. .. it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number, so that it can be used for far larger purchases.
***end of warning***

Fritton Lodge gains Outstanding accolade
by Shaun McGarry, Vice Chairman on 5:37 pm

Press Release #166
16 August 2011
“Outstanding” accolade for respite scheme
A scheme which provides residential respite care for children with disabilities has been rated “outstanding” by Ofsted inspectors just eight months after the service was launched.
Fritton Lodge, at Fritton Lakes on the Somerleyton Estate, received the accolade following its first ever inspection earlier this summer. It began operating last December.
The scheme offers residential short break care for small groups of children with learning disabilities, who are aged between five and 18. It is commissioned by NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney and provided by the charity Break in a lodge owned by Suffolk County Council.
Currently, four young people aged between 12 and 16 stay at the lodge during weekends to give their families a break from providing care. During their stay, they can also take part in a range of leisure activities, such as boating, walking, exploring the woodland surrounding the lodge and using the outdoor play facilities. The group also takes part in off-site activities, such as crabbing at Walberswick, swimming at Bungay and visiting the theatre and cinema.
Elaine Mash, commissioning manager for children and maternity with NHS GYW, said: “We are delighted that Fritton Lodge has received this tremendous accolade from its regulatory inspection just months after the service was launched.
“It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of all of the partners involved in the project, including NHS GYW, Suffolk County Council and Break, which offers the care and management within this lovely setting. The lodge is fully adapted to meet the children’s needs and, when not in residential use, it offers families an ideal break away with their disabled children.
“Feedback from those using the service has also been fantastic. The families appreciate the service and have a close working relationship with the Break staff, while the children really enjoy spending time at Fritton and making the most of the activities on offer. This is a new experience for these young people which offers them more natural away from home opportunities.”
Chris Hoddy, CEO of Break, said: “The project at Fritton has been a great opportunity to expand our services. It is a great example of the voluntary sector working in partnership with the statutory authorities to provide services for children and families and fits very well with the government’s agenda. Break now has two projects relating to Suffolk and hope this could be the springboard for other opportunities within the county.”
