A Retinal Prosthetic Powered by Light

A new type of eye implant requires less hardware and could restore more vision than existing devices.

Sunday, May 13, 2012

By Katherine Bourzac

Retinal implants powered by light could reverse some vision loss with simple surgery.

The new implant, which works like a combination digital imaging chip and photovoltaic array, requires much less bulky hardware than
previous designs. The devices have yet to be tested in live animals or human patients, but the implants are creating excitement
among researchers because they have greater pixel densities and may restore more vision than other retinal prosthetics being worked
on.

People suffering from macular degeneration (the most common cause of blindness among older people) and some other forms of blindness
have lost the light-sensing cells in the retina but still have the underlying nerve cells that convey visual information to the
brain. Retinal implants use electrodes to stimulate those nerves. Typically, the prosthetics require bulky electronics that sit on
the eye to supply power, image data, or both to a chip inside the retina. The more hardware that’s installed in the body, the
greater the risk to the patient. And the complexities of the electronics have typically limited the pixel counts of these systems.

The new design, described today in the journal Nature Photonics, gets around these problems by using light as both image and power
source. The device, designed by researchers at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, combines infrared video-projection
goggles with a small, wire-free chip implanted inside the retina.

Dear members and friends,

Our next meeting is our AGM. It is time to take stock and report on what we have achieved in the last year.

It is on Monday 28th May at Wherry Way Communal Room as usual, starting from 2:30pm with tea and coffee served from 2pm. We finish
at 4:30pm.

Town & Country Travel is our preferred transport service, to take you safely there and back again. The low cost taxi service, just
£4, can be booked on 01493 301 759.

We would like as many people with any visual impairment or their carers to come, to join the group, get more involved and decide on
our future, which is even more important now with the changes that are happening to our benefits and local services, so please do
come!

But to make the meeting a little more enjoyable, we are going to have a man who knows all there is about Fire! He is Andy Wells and
he is the Crew Manager of the Great Yarmouth Fire Station!

Andy will demonstrate special equipment the fire fighters use, talk about fire safety in our homes and what we can do to minimise
the risks. He will also answer any questions we may have.

So please consider coming to our meetings, and help us make a difference in our community. The taxi number is 01493 301 759.

See you there!

For anyone making their own way by car, the venue is Wherry Way Communal Room, Wherry Way, off Caister Road, Great Yarmouth NR30
4DJ.

Working Together

Ideas into Actions

You are invited to come along to a workshop to share ideas about how we make sure that the views, experiences and expertise of
people who use services are built into the way we design and commission new social care and health services.

At an initial workshop on 19 March 2012 a mixed group of people who use services and Health and Social Care Commissioners and
Engagement Managers from across Norfolk came together to identify the key elements of how commissioners and people who use services
should work together

This series of workshops is happening more locally in Norfolk to talk about how to turn these ideas into actions that can be taken
forward jointly by local commissioners and community members.

We are inviting people who came to the first workshop and others locally to attend whichever of the 4 meetings best suits you. There
are 15 places at each workshop.

Friday 18 May 10.30 to 12.30

The Caister Room, The Kings Centre, 30 Queen Anne’s Road Great Yarmouth NR31 0LE

01493 445949

(see attached document for other venues around Norfolk)

To tell us you want to come

Please telephone or email Lesley Johnson -

01603 595804

Lesley.johnson3@nhs.net

Please tell us if there is anything you need to be able to attend. We have booked venues that are accessible to people who use a
wheelchair. We are happy to assist with other requirements.

PLEASE NOTE: for West Norfolk we are combining a workshop with one already arranged for Thursday 17th May, 10 am- 3.30pm at the West
Norfolk Professional Development Centre in King’s Lynn. For more information or to book a place for this workshop please ring Penny
